In a world increasingly driven by quick answers and digital echo chambers, where do we go to have conversations that actually matter? How do we explore the profound questions that shape our lives, our society, and our future?

Welcome to the Temperance Philosophy Club – a thriving local phenomenon that has brought together over 500 participants in the last year alone. Hosted by Paolo Turrini (University of Warwick), this is not a traditional lecture. It is a vibrant, democratic “Socrates Cafe” where the university meets the community, and where everyone’s voice holds equal weight.

The Architecture of the Afternoon

We arrive with blank slates and open minds. The direction we take is entirely up to you:

* The Inquiry: We begin with a blank agenda. You are invited to propose any question that moves you, from the ethics of modern technology to the ancient pursuit of happiness.
* The Vote: Through a democratic, public vote, the room selects a single question to anchor our afternoon.
* The Dialogue: For ninety minutes, we explore that question together. Guided by our host, we engage in structured, respectful, and deeply enriching dialogue.

The Impact: Beyond the Room

This club is more than a monthly meeting; it is a movement to bridge the gap between academic research and the local community. Attendees consistently leave not just with new perspectives, but with ideas that echo into their daily lives and future conversations.

When the formal session concludes at 3:30 PM, the inquiry often continues. We reserve a “philosophers’ table” at the cafe for those who wish to carry the dialogue forward, forging new friendships over coffee.

The Details

* Venue: Temperance (33 Bath Street, Leamington Spa) – a beautiful space dedicated to the arts and community.
